My office, GHL Consultants Ltd, has been working on the world's tallest timber building at the University of British Columbia (UBC)'s Vancouver campus. I have the high honour of working along side my mentor, Andrew Harmsworth, the architectural team from AOA and the structural team from Fast+Epp. It has been an incredible experience working alongside the industry's top talents and participate in the panel discussions consisting of leading experts from across the country organized by the government of BC.Officially known as Brock Commons Phase 1, the 18 storey UBC student residence will be one of the tallest timber buildings to be constructed in recent history. With a physical height of 53m, the structure will be a hybrid system comprised of 17 storeys of mass wood construction utilizing cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels and glue-laminated columns. There will be two 18 level concrete cores containing exit stairs and elevators. The student residence will house approximately 400 beds. Read more.
